Hi! I’m Jonny Atkinson

Jonny Atkinson Pet Portrait Artist

Pencil drawing has been an interest of mine ever since I was a young boy.

Every Saturday I would religiously pick up the latest football magazine or my favourite comic and try to copy the players and super heroes I saw before me. As the likeness of my boyhood idols began to get better I started to enjoy the process of creating artwork even more. I continued to develop my love of art through school and college and eventually graduated with a Fine Art BA Honours from Kingston University in 2008.

I enjoy the simplicity of pencil art. Relying on the subjects’ basic tones and textures in order to capture a likeness and spirit is a complicated and often time-consuming journey that requires a lot of patience. The end result is the most satisfying feeling any artist can ever experience.

Honing My Craft Through Portraiture

I believe capturing a likeness is essential in any good piece of portrait art, and although my work includes an element of realism, I want it to represent the chosen medium as much as possible – pencil. I want the viewer to see the unique markings that you can only achieve from graphite on paper. I want them to see the smudges and marks left behind. I see this as a narrative of the work’s undertaking whilst affirming to the viewer that it is a hand drawn piece of artwork and not a seamless copy of a photograph. I want my pet portraits to evoke a certain happiness and warmth, displaying each pet’s character to its full potential and creating a familiarity even if the viewer does not personally know them.

My custom portrait commission service provides customers with hand-drawn Pet Portraits and People Portraits. Each order is lovingly crafted from your digital photos to deliver a one-off original piece of art that can be treasured for years to come.
